The dynamic duo of Kyyberi & Vasara is travelling to Jaca, Spain to attend IIHF Division IIB World Championships in April. The reports from the trip are this year available also in English and you'll find them both here. The reports include game reports as well as other stuff from our trip and are updated as often as possible. We also do video interviews with players from the tournament and maybe also with other people we encouter on this trip. This isn't the first time we travel to division IIB World Champioships as we attended the same tournament last year in Izmit, Turkey. This year the participating countries include Mexico, New Zealand, China and Turkey from last year as well as South Africa who promoted from division III and the hosts Spain who relegated from division IIA. At this moment there's not much known for the rosters in tournament but somekind of a preview can be found here as soon as all roster are announced. The reports are also available on our frontpage, in our Facebook page as well as in specific Facebook page created for this trip. Unfortunately in Facebook the reports will be in Finnish, excluding some of the videos. And if someone non-Finnish speaking has something questions and comments about our trip or maybe you might have a player who you want to be interviewed you can post in the this thread. On the front page you can also vote for the most interesting country participating the tournament. Links found below

Alright, it's time for daily report.

The alarm clock was set for alarm about 3 AM. The departure time for our flight was 6.15 AM so we had to be early on the move. In the plane we had little sleep and ate a small breakfast.

After arriving to Barcelona we took a car rent company mini bus that took us to company's office where we rented a car. The car turned out to be Toyota Aygo that had many features that reminded us of a moped instead of a real car. Also it was really small and we had some trouble getting our luggage in. At this point I have say that it was a good thing that the there were only two of us in the car. We had planned to use a navigating device to locate our destiny. Unfortunately the device had no intensions in helping us so we had to take a printed map and try to navigate toward Jaca by ourselves. Luckily we also had printed route directions from Google Maps.

After nearly 4 hours and 350 kilometres of driving we finally arrived in Jaca. Check in at hotel and then we headed to the ice hockey arena, Pabellon de Hielo. We had planned to go there and ask about our media accrediation but we were told that local el jefe is not in the arena and that he would be back at about 5 PM. At this point we started to feel hungry so we decided to go and grab something to eat. Unfortunately we noticed that these guys are having a freakin' siesta here so all restaurants were closed atleast until 5 PM. Finally we managed to get some food at the hotel with the help from hotel receptionist. We also heard that during siesta there's only one grocery store open. So after eating we headed there to buy something more to eat and drink.

Next we headed back to the arena to get our media accrediations. We were told that el jefe was in a meeting and that we'd have to wait. After 40 minutes of waiting we finally got the media accrediation cards and we also noticed that these guys are more serious than organizer in Turkey last year as pretty much anybody could access any part of the arena. This time they took our names on the list for persones allowed in the arena and the confirmed our identities from our passports. Yet we have the media accrediation cards it is still unknown what areas of the arena we can access but they'll let us know it by tomorrow. All we know that we get to see the games without paying for the tickets. (Last year there were no tickets for the games in Turkey)

As we headed back to the hotel we found some kind of sports shop that had showcase window full of hockey memorabilia, includin Spanish national team jerseys, hockey equipment, hockey pucks (even an official SM-liiga puck) and a tournament advertisement. A picture of this can be found in our !Viva España Facenbook page.

It's been a long day and now it's time to get some sleep so that we have enough energy to watch the games tomorrow.

Pictures and video (in Finnish) coming up later.

There's also a live stream available where you can watch the games from the tournament: http://www.pasionmc.com/

Report from the opening day.

We woke up early as we had gone to sleep early on Friday. After couples of hours of relaxing we decided to go out and find some food. But once again, every restaurant was closed. But luckily we managed to find something to eat, a similar sandwiches than we ate yesterday.

After that we went to the arena to find out where we can access with our media passes. It turned out that we can go near the ice rink and we have a free entry to the stands. First thing we did in the stands was to go and meet New Zealands support group which had a couple of familiar faces from last year.

The first game was between New Zealand and Turkey. The game gave everybody the first surprise of the tournament as Turkey had learned how to have organized attacks. They even took 1-0 lead with a goal scored by Alec Kocoglu. New Zealand managed to tie the score 2 minutes later on man advantage. Turkey scored another goal after 16 minutes of play but the Ice Blacks evened the score once again. Turkey were on upper hand until mid second period when the Ice Blacks scored to quick goals. Turkey couldn't comeback and New Zealand took home the first victory with the score 6-3.During the match the 3rd part of our group, user MM92, joined us. We also noticed that you can have beer from the arena and drink it in the stands.

With MM92 with us we went to eat after the game. We met Turkey's goalie Erol Kahraman at the restaurant's bar and shared a few words with him. Then we headed to watch game between South Africa and China. Last year China surprised us by being a very physical team. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be their tactic this year. South Africa's gigantic goalie Ashley Bock played a good game and kept the score tight. The final score was 1-4 to China. During the game we noticed a familiar face in the stands, former SM-liiga coach Timo Tuomi. He is helping team Spain in the tournament. We talked to him and the other Spanish coach Maurizio Mansi for a short time.

The last game of the day was between Mexico and Spain. The hosts were dominating Mexico in about everything on ice and during the 2nd period they took a 4-0 lead. At this point it looked like the game was over but somehow Mexico managed to score 3 goals making 4-3 with the last minute of the game. But that wasn't enough as Spain scored another goal with 16 seconds left game giving them 5-3 win.

During the day we also met some more familiar faces from last year. The Latvian Mexico fans are here as well as people from Germany's Icehopper (link to their site: http://icehopper.de/wbblite/ ). As the games were over we headed back to the hotel with a plan to meet the Germans in bar. We took pizzas to the hotel from a near pizzeria. After eating the we went to look for the Germans. After almost giving up we found and joined them for a short time. We had to leave early as we were really tired and we had agreed an interview with Timo Tuomi for the next morning.

Report from the 2nd game day:

As said in previous post, we had agreed to meet former SM-liiga coach Timo Tuomi in the morning at the Pabellon de Hielo. He gave us a tour inside Spanish team locker room and offered us a cup of coffee there. Even I had to drink coffee after such offer even I usually don't drink it. We made a 25-minute long interview with Mr. Tuomi and went back to the hotel. Unfortunately the interview is in Finnish so I'm not going to share a link to it here.

After the hotel we went back to the arena and decided to have something to eat. We bought similar sandwiches than we had in previous days. The first game was between Turkey and South Africa. It was the game that would most likely define which team is getting relegated to division III. Turkey played really lazy and the South Africans took a 2-4 victory with 3 consectuive goals in the second half of the game. Big win for South Africa and Turkey is now on the edge of relegation.

User MM92 joined us during the first period of the game and after the game ended we decided to have something to eat. After eating we went back to the arena to watch the game between New Zealand and Mexico. The score was tied 0-0 at the end of the 1st period when we arrived but soon Mexico scored the first goal of the game just 21 seconds left the period. The Ice Blacks weren't playing their best game and allowed Mexico to score two more goals in the 2nd period. Mexico played well and due to bad playing by New Zealand the Mexicans won the game 5-0. I quickly chatted with New Zealand's defender Andrew Hay after the game and he was anything but happy how they performed in the match.

The third game was between the hosts and China and the arena was full as Spain was playing. Spain got an early lead with a bit of an easy goal after a defensive zone mistake by China. The score was 1-0 for a long time until Spain scored another goal at 8 minutes left of the game. Followed by a quick goal they took a 3-0 lead and China started to get frustrated. Four and half minutes before the end there was a normal scrum in front of the goal but suddenly China's Ling Chen jumped a Spaniard who was lying on the ice and hit him to the back of the head with a cross-check. This was followed by a bigger scrum but no gloves were dropped. Chen got 2+10min for checking to head for his cheap shot. Spain scored one more goal on the power play and the final score was 4-0.

After the game we went to a restaurant to eat with MM92 and his wife. We invited MM92 as a guest to our post-game day studio (once again it's in Finnish so no link will be available here).

Now it's a day off in tournament and a good day go through the photos I've taken so far so I could possibly put them up on facebook for everybody to see. Still no big plans for today. The tournament continues tomorrow.

Here's a video that has some footage from the arena before and during the Mexico-Spain game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JiT_WdZY6M

Reports from the day off and from 3rd game day

We spent the day off mostly resting and relaxing. I also went through pictures I've taken so far and they will be available via our Facebook page later, probably next week. We had also found a taekwondo dojang in here. We visited the dojang earlier and met master Hyun-Chul Oh who, despite the fact that we had a language barrier, welcomed us to train with his students in the evening. So in the evening we entered the dojang and had nice time training a sport we both love, I've been training taekwondo 14 years and Kyyberi 23 years. After the training we went eating and started to shoot some videos. We also made a drunken tour in the city which caused a head ache in the next morning. During the day off the 3rd member of our group, user MM92, left the town so we are now back as a duo.

So the tournament continued on yesterday. After surviving the head-ache we went to the arena. It was time to watch game between Mexico and China. The game was very entertaining with lots of goals, hits and emotion. Mexico took an early 2-0 lead and after that China had a timeout. Surprisingly aftet the time out China scored 3 goals and ended the period with 3-2 lead. I don't know which caused the momentum change, China's improved playing or Mexicon lazy playing. Nevertheless China extended their lead 4-2 on power play early in the 2nd period. After the goal there was another momentum change. Mexico scored 3 consecutive goals and made it 5-4 after the 2nd period. China couldn't recover and Mexico ended up winning the game 7-4. During the game we filmed some Latvian fans who were cheering for Mexico. We also interviewed one of them who actually turned to be a fan of South Africa. The video can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENnNHtKCHjU

The second game was between New Zealand and South Africa. This game was supposed to be a piece of cake for New Zealand. But once again were wrong as South Africa took a surprising 1-0 lead after 8 minutes of play with an easy goal by Gareth Miller. Eight minutes later Utham Samaai extended South Africa's lead to 2-0. New Zealand had been struggling with goal scoring as they had been shut out for the last 4 periods in the tournament. The struggling continued in the 2nd period but finally Joshua Hay managed to end the scoreless streak just 39 seconds left the period and gave a very important goal to the Ice Blacks. The goal gave a boost the Kiwis and Andrew Cox, who has also been playing couple of season in Finland, scored a hat trick leading his team to a 4-2 victory. During the match we took the Hay brothers Andrew, Joshua and Oliver under surveillance as we were making a video of them with interviews and some highlights of their perfomances on the ice. Reason were doing the video is that it is highly uncommon to a national team to have 3 brothers playing for them in a championship tournament. Actually, we think it is the first time ever. We also interviewed the Hay bros, mother Elizabeth and father Grant, who by the way is the president of the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation.

The last game was between Spain and Turkey. We missed the first 35 minutes of the game because we were interviewing the Hay brothers. As we arrived to the arena Spain was leading 5-0 with 5 minutes left of the 2nd period. The house was full once again and atmosphere was high. There was some emotions in the stands as well as on the ice. Small scrums occured time after time and we found out that Spain's Pol Gonzalez was earlier thrown out for kneeing. One of the main agitators in Turkey's team was Andy Kocoglu, who roughed up with the Spaniards couple of times and took a stupid charging penalty in the 3rd. In the last minute of the game Turkey's Savas Akturk even dropped gloves and invited Spain's Ignacio Solorzano to a fight. Too bad they both had cages on and when Akturk dropped his gloves Solorzano was already skating away. Akturk gt 2+10min for roughing. The game ended 8-0 to Spain and we headed back to our hotel, had some pizza and started to prepare ourselves for the 4th day in tournament.

Day 4 in the tournament:

First game was between China and New Zealand. The Ice Black took the lead after 7 minutes of play by a goal scored by Andrew Cox. Two minutes later China evened up the scored and took the control of the game. They scored another goal later in the period and ended it with a 2-1 lead. The Chinese team controlled the whole 2nd period but didn't manage to score any goals. The Ice Blacks gained some control in the 3rd but struggled to score any goals until Andrew Cox tied the game less than 2,5 minutes left of the game. With no more goals scored on the regulation the game was to be decided on overtime. The overtime went on just 11 seconds before who else than Andrew Cox scored the game winner for New Zealand. Cox, who by the way has played in Finland, has now scored a hat trick in two consecutive games. With the 3-2 OT victory New Zealand secured a medal from this tournament and it most likely will be a bronze one as they play against the tournament host Spain in the last game of the championships.

The second game was between Turkey and Mexico. Mexico had the control of the game in the first period and scored two goals to make it 2-0 after the first. In early 2nd period we witnessed something that nobody expected as Turkey number 12 Andy Kocoglu, who have got a lot of criticism from us during the tournamet for his lazy attitude, scored with a one-timer after face-off win by Alper Solak. This goal gave Kocoglu a boost that helped him to skate semi-fast in the next shift. Despite the goal and the boost he got from it, he returned to his normal lazy playing for the rest of the game. We by the way had him under surveillance and a video for his efforts in the making. It'll be available later. The score was 2-1 to Mexico after the 2nd period. Santiago Sierra scored Mexico's 3rd goal just 16 seconds of play in the 3rd. Turkey couldn't recover from the goal and lost the game 1-5. At 44:41 we witnessed a strange and nasty event as Mexico's Fernando Ugarte collided with Turkey's Serkan Gumus in what seemed to be an unintentional accidental collision. Ugarte layed motionless on ice for a while and things didn't look good. Finally he got up and was helped to the bench by his team mates. Later he returned to game so he was really lucky. After the collision a small scrum ensued and the referee decided to throw Turkey's Yusuf Halil out for spearing. We didn't notice anything even close to a spear.

The 3rd game was between South Africa and Spain. The tournament hosts dominated the game but South Africa's gigantic goalie Ashley Bock the score was kept tight. The first period ended in Spain's 1-0 lead. As a much better team Spain finally won the game 6-0. The shot totals (Spain 42, RSA 8) show really well how the game went on. With the victory Spain secured the gold medal and promotion to division IIA. It is also a sure thing that Turkey is going to relegate to division III.

After the game we went eating and shot couple of videos. We even did one video in English as our video of Latvian hockey fans here in Jaca made it to Latvias biggest internet portal. The English speaking video is available later.

Today was the 2nd day off in the tournament. We spent the day mostly recovering from last night but we visited the arena to watch Spain's training session. After the training session we did an interview with Carlos Quevedo. The interview will be available later and it is in Finnish as Carlos has been playing in Finland for the last six seasons and he speaks good Finnish.

Allright, recovering from the trip while working wasn't as easy as I had thought. And also my easter was so full of action (Hatebreed gig@Nosturi on Thursday, hockey tournament on Friday and season ending trip to Tallinn with my hockey team on Saturday) that I haven't been able to sum up the trip nor write the report from the last tournament day earlier. So I'm sorry for the delay but here we go:

On Friday, the last day of the tournamet, we woke up early and went to the arena to see if there were any teams on ice as they were scheduled. There were no players near the arena so went back to the hotel to have some more sleep before the first game.

The first game was between Mexico and South Africa. Mexico controlled the game but the score was even until the last 10 minutes of the game. The 1st goal was scored early in the 2nd period by Mexico's Adrian Cervantes. RSA's Uthman Samaai tied the game in the 3rd but Mexico finally won 3-1. After the game I went to Mexico's Cristofer Kelo and asked him if there was any chance of getting a game worn jersey. He gave me his jersey and now my collection of game worn jerseys also include Mexican jersey. We also interviewed RSA's gigantic goalie Ashley Bock after the game. Mr. Bock turned to be a nice and funny guy. A video of the interview will be available later.

The second game was between China and Turkey. It was an entetaining game with a lot of goals. Turkey surprised us by playing Levent Özbaydugan as the starting goalie. His technic isn't the best but he was effective enough on saving department as Turkey won the game 6-4. Still they got relegated which is a shame. We had plans to interview goalie Erol Kahraman after the game and ask if we could get us Turkey's jersey. Unfortunately Kyyberi's cell phone's battery was nearly dead so we had to go back to hotel to charge it. So no interview nor jerseys. Better luck next time.

The last match of tournament was between Spain and New Zealand. We watched the game with New Zealands fans. There were also some Mexican and South African players joining us. Earlier in the day the mother of the Hay bros. had told us that the Hockey Hall Of Fame wants to have her sons jersey in their collection. But now, to the match. It was all Spain but New Zealand managed to keep the score close almost half of the game. Then Spain put another gear on and took home the victory with a 6-2 score. The game was entertaining as it had some emotion and hard hits. During the game Kyyberi interviewed Mexico's Cristofer Kelo. A video will be available later.

After the game it was time for the award ceremonies. As representatives of media we went to ice to follow the ceremonies. There will be a video available as soon as it is finished. After the ceremonies we interviewed New Zealand's Andrew Cox and Spain's Patrick Fuentes. Both interviews will be available later.

The final ranking of the division II group B championships:
1. Spain (promotes to division II group A)
2. Mexico
3. New Zealand
4. China
5. South Africa
6. Turkey (relegated to division III)

As the tournament was over we headed to a restaurant to have something to eat. During the trip to the restaurant we were joined by Turkey's goalie Erol Kahraman and their Slovakian assistant coach Denis Legersky. They both were unhappy of Turkey relegation. They said that due the problems they had with their top level (Super Lig) their players didn't have a proper season and for that reason the team didn't reach it's full potential. Goalie Kahraman said that if they had reached the full potential they'd been at least third in the tournament!

After eating we went to our hotel to shoot Studio Sofa 7 (unfortunately in Finnish) and the we headed to the night of Jaca where we found players and other staff from all teams except China. We had a lot of fun with them but due the fact we were facing a long trip back home on Saturday we had to give up at 5 AM and go to our hotel to get some sleep. We woke up with a hangover, packed our stuff and headed back to Barcelona.

There's not much to tell about our trip back to Barcelona as our car, the tiny Toyota Aygo, seemed to work better than on our first part of the journey from Jaca to Barcelona week earlier. Maybe the car had noticed that we were nice guys and wanted to give us a nice memory of him. Wink You never know. We left Jaca early as we wanted to be sure we would make it to Barcelona in time. It was a good decision at this point as we took a couple of extra turns in Barcelona as our route directions didn't match with all the street names but finally we made it to the car rental company. Their minibus took us to the airport where we had to wait a couple of our for before the check-in. After the check-in we still had a couple of ours before the plane started boarding but finally we made it to the plane. As I sat on my seat I noticed a wonderful thing. The seat next to me was left empty so I could rest my injured knee easily and make the trip more comfortable for me. Two extremely tired fellows arrived to Finland at about 3.35 AM on Sunday. I finally got to bed at 5 AM and can say that I was really tired later that day. Not to mention how tired I was on Monday at work.

To sum things up I must say that the trip was awesome and we had a lot of fun in Spain. I highly recomment these kind of trips to everyone who loves hockey.

And in the end I want to thank everybody involved with the trip and everybody who has been following and commenting our trip on the internet.
